English version:
I would like to officially emphasize that used items attract us more than new ones. And yes, we still respect handicrafts. We even have many favorite artists who know very well what to do with their hands and we try to support them. Eternal glory to POOKA POLAND and ST. GUSTAV manufacture. There is a but though. Since we appeared on Scandinavian soil, and now also in Iceland, and we discovered loppemarkets, or if you prefer flea markets, we buy there often and willingly.
On the island of Heimaey, to our delight, we have one boutique of this type, and it is quite well equipped. Surprisingly also in Polish ceramic products from Bolesławiec. Icelanders love these tableware. They are even cheaper here than in Poland. Mugs at the gym, which I signed up for before the coronavirus closed it, each piece was from Bolesławiec. In the hotel where I work, I also found a pair of dishes of this brand. Icelandic tastes are not fully clear to me yet. Work in progress.
As we also respect this brand, I chose one item from Bolesławiec. Babushka candlestick. We gave it that name together. Its warm light keeps the white Scandinavian interior cosy. An absolute must have for long, dark, cold Icelandic evenings.
Flea markets here are usually large halls filled with lamps, furniture, radio and household appliances, ceramics. You can wander around for hours, weaving forgotten stories of individual items in your head. My attention was drawn to the portrait of a mysterious young lady from the title photo. Such a snot, and already so many secrets in her, I thought. I was sure she had spotted me first, not the other way round. I didn’t buy the painting, letting her stare at all the customers. Old-fashioned monitoring, just right for this place.
For more interesting items, we also found an American vintage refrigerator. The one that the fashionable retro edition of SMEG is based on. Perhaps. There has always been a large flow of goods between America and Iceland. The flight from here to US takes only 5 hours.
Icelanders tend to decorate houses for Christmas in American style, richly and lavishly. But more on that soon.
I invite you on a virtual tour of our store. Keep cool. Ciao.
